Phono 1.6 Update

With this new release we introduced tree new ways for to link the logo.
These new methods give to Phono the possibility to support virtual operators
hasn't their own mnc.

Available methods

Standard:
this method is suggested to everybody hasn't issue with the logo.

Operator name: [new]
the operator name is retrieved from network, usually is the carrier where the phone is hooked.
This method is very similar to the standard useful if your mcc-mnc isn't inserted.

Custom operator name: [new]
this method retreive the logo information by the operator name inserted by the customer in the
preferences.
This method is deprecated because is a static method, Phono isn't able to understand if the carrier
change, we suggest to use it only if your carrier is a mvno and doesn't shows the right operator
name trought the network (method 2).
Remember to set the custom operator name in the activity preferences
Please do not use local charset to use this method to link the logo (eg: cyrillic, Thai, Indi or any non standard characters)

Line name: [new]
the method retreive the operator name from the sim, normally this field is empty but I noted some
MVNO write there the carrier name.
This method could be use alternatively to the method 3.
Beware because is a static method, Phono isn't able to understand if the carrier change, we suggest
to use it only if your carrier is a mvno and doesn't shows the right operator name trought the
network (method 2).

tips: Use logo helper in the activity menu

techeld.com review

Thanks to terminal7, Techeld.com owner, we got a wonderful review we are proud to shows:

Android phones at their default state dont have a visible operator logo, this feature is something i missed from day one of owning my G1 and since i had always enjoyed seeing the operator logo as far back as the days of the nokia 3110 it soon became a mission to find a way of displaying the network providers logo for all to see ! – Yeah okay so may be thats a bit too dramatic but i still wanted to see it anyway LOL......
.......Phono is a worldwide app and as such should work in all countries and show the correct logo for your network carrier, also it will display info about your roaming status which can be vital for some people. Phono works on all builds of Android

I would strongly recommend to all of you this excellent site (techeld.com), very well maintained and very informative.
Terminal7, the owner of Techeld.com is an extremely correct to its users, so that before writing the review to Phono he informed me that he also highlighted any negativity.
Thank Terminal7 for the review!

Note:
often in the reviews I'm the only mentioned, but I would remember to all that there is a team:
  • Tom
  • Andy
  • Ianc
  • Me
and many others friends help us!

Honeycomb fix will be release to the market soon, if you would to have it before write me.

26 March, 2011

Happy Birthday Phono, thank you all!

Happy Birthday!
A year has passed since the first release on the market, during this period many things happened, almost 38,000 people use Phono with an average rating of 4.46/5,
we lost some friends along the way (Maez) we found many others (all on one Ianc but Denisssr too) ... .. a bit 'as it happens in everyday life .....
we spent nights thinking and work ... and why not other sleep ;-)!
One thing very nice to see was how the Dev Team has joined, grew up with Phono!
Tom has done a great job, always present and punctual, with creativity and professionalism, Andy has demonstrated competence and despite his work commitments was always present and cooperative, Tom and Andy are able to tolerate me :-) .... well done!
You people have been very patient and although we were unable to accommodate all the requests.... So good!

In this post I would like to thank all Users and all the Dev Team!

THANKS

Russian localization (DanisSSSR 4PDA)

I see a Russian comunity worked to localize Phono, it's nice and I'm proud to discover that, I try to contact them, but for language problems (cyrilic) I'm not able to do it.......
If somebody of this comunity would be so kindly to contact me on this blog or via mail I will be happy to insert the Russian localization in the next release!
Thanks

Google removes 21 infection-filled applications

Yesterday I was very surprised to read this article Google removes 21 infection-filled applications I ask myself why in an enviroment like android, with many free applications, many open comunity and users very available to learn and experiment there is people lost time and energy to dev malaware instead of nice and useful applications? ......i'm really shocked........

I remember to all the Phono's users that the Phono apk DOES NOT NEED ANY INTERNET CONNECTION to run, that's mean your DATA ARE SAFE AND SURE!!!!!

Notification issue [know bug solved]

Thank's to Roberto and Tomek, we discovered a bug in the notification system.
The problem was that the notification of roaming remained active despite the choice of "No notification" in preference.
The problem has been resolved and will be included in the next release.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

How Phono measures the signal strenght

Here some details, how phono calculates the signal percentage:

To determine the signal strength dBm is used, Android provides also ASU, which determine the speed at which the phone is able to update its position with the nearby antennas.
Phono uses an algorithm that tasform the asu in decibels to determine the actual signal strength on a linear scale. The bars in the statusbar instead take a range from -112dBm (low) to -60dBm (signal good) and for example when you above -87dBm it shows full, even if it should not. So the graph in the status bar is really approximate.
To further verify what I'm saying you can use: -> Menu -> Settings -> Phone info -> Network (second item) -> Signal strength (second item)
You'll find the specified dBm and ASU, compare them with those of Phono and see which are the same (but do not change location while doing it).

Finally to say the signal quality is a provider / net problem and not an issue of phono!

Hope this makes the situation a little bit clear to the users. ;) If not, feel free to contact us.

PS
If you got 180% signal strength, please Read here:Galaxy s2 2.3.3 issue

Move to sd

For peoples asked to move Phono to sd:

Direct from android dev documentation

Applications That Should NOT Install on External Storage

When the user enables USB mass storage to share files with their computer (or otherwise unmounts or removes the external storage), any application installed on the external storage and currently running is killed. The system effectively becomes unaware of the application until mass storage is disabled and the external storage is remounted on the device. Besides killing the application and making it unavailable to the user, this can break some types of applications in a more serious way. In order for your application to consistently behave as expected, you should not allow your application to be installed on the external storage if it uses any of the following features, due to the cited consequences when the external storage is unmounted:
..............

App Widgets
Your App Widget will be removed from the home screen. When external storage is remounted, your App Widget will not be available for the user to select until the system resets the home application (usually not until a system reboot).

Like developer we think to give to the user a stable application! That's the main reason we do not raccoment to move Phono on sd.

@alessandro
You give us one star cause we don't allow to move Phono on sd, before to be so categorical you could write us a mail and ask the reason about our decision.....or to read the documentation......

Verizon & Sprint issue (1.4a)

=- SOLVED -=

Thanks to Larry and DJ, we found that Verizon and Sprint for their CDMA networks do not use unique identifiers, this causes an incorrect view of the Verizon logo.
We have already solved the problem and the solution will be included in the next release.

For anyone who has no time to wait for the official release write to us, we will send directly the fixing.
Thanks
